National Nursing Competencies

This document provides the user with the ability to map their skills to specific areas of practice so that they can tailor it’s use to their needs, build on existing skills when they are ready to and be re-assured by the transferability between services. The mapping documents include preceptorship, PCC Level 1, PCC Level 2, long term ventilation skills and optional modules for specialist areas of practice such as cardiac making the document applicable to both tertiary and district general hospitals.

The National Nursing Competencies version 2 was released in October 2025 and is now available to use. These now exist in both paper and digital formats. Further detailed information can be found on the Futures page links below.

We are pleased that the competencies have been adopted in all Trusts across the south west region. The Level 1 / 2 PCC accredited course, delivered by the Faculty of Nurse Education and Research in BRHC, is also aligned with the national competency document.
